Inlays and onlays work in a similar way to a filling or a crown and are designed to restore a tooth that has been damaged in some way, either by decay or injury or simple wear and tear.
Inlays and onlays are used in different situations, although they are both made off-site in a trusted dental laboratory, and applied here at Bank Chambers Dental Practice, usually over two appointments.
An inlay is most similar to a filling and sits inside a tooth, filling a cavity and repairing the tooth. They can provide more protection than a simple filling, and are often used when a filling has failed and/or in teeth towards the back of the mouth where there is a larger surface area, and more protection is needed.
Onlays offer a more conservative, less invasive treatment than a crown. They sit over the cusps of a tooth – i.e., the raised part of the tooth that is visible – and are bonded to the biting surface. Where suitable, they can be used instead of a crown and often present a preferable alternative as more of the healthy tooth can be preserved.
