What is a bridge?

Bridges are a way to restore a smile with a missing tooth. A prosthetic tooth is used to fill the gap left by the missing tooth with the healthy teeth on either side acting as abutments or ‘anchors’ supporting it.

Why do I need a bridge?

Replacing a missing tooth or teeth is important for a variety of reasons. Even a single missing tooth can lead to further complications and oral health issues such as misalignment of the remaining teeth, loss of bone density in the jaw, tooth decay and gum disease. It can also cause difficulty for the patient when it comes to eating and speaking, as well as lead to feelings of self-consciousness when smiling.

What types of bridges are available?

• Traditional bridges – The most common type of dental bridge. This is where a prosthetic tooth is supported by dental crowns on either side.
• Cantilever bridge – This is similar to a traditional bridge but uses one adjacent tooth as support.
• Maryland bridges – This is where the prosthetic tooth is supported by a metal frame that acts like wings attached to the adjacent teeth.

What is the treatment process like?

We can usually complete a bridge in just two appointments at Bank Chambers Dental Practice. At the first appointment, we’ll take scans or impressions of the mouth and prepare the adjoining healthy teeth if necessary.

These will be sent off to our trusted dental laboratory partner, where your personalised bridge will be made. Once ready, you’ll return to the practice, and we’ll fit the bridge for you here.
